Barra Honda National Park is a national park in the western part of Costa Rica, which forms part of the Tempisque Conservation Area about 12 km (7.46 mi) from the Tempisque River. It was created in 1974 to protect its famous cave systems, under the Barra Honda Peak which was formed when islets from the Miocene Erawere raised above the plains of the river. The caves and waterways there today were then carved out by the action of rain filtering through the limestone over 70 million years or more.

Small and quaint, filled with tasty restaurants and folksy artisan shops, while the nearby rainforest hosts a remarkable amount of biodiversity.
Due to its high altitude – some 4,662 ft (1,440 m) above sea level – Monteverde is privileged to receive a steady supply of clouds and the life-giving moisture that they contain. This moisture, often in the form of fog, catches on the branches of the tallest trees and drips down to the other organisms below. This helps to support a complex and far-reaching ecosystem, one that harbors over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties of plants, 420 of which are orchids alone.

A visit to the Marino Baulas National Park helps support the community efforts to finance continued efforts to protect the area from development that can damage this fragile ecosystem. Leatherbacks face a wide array of challenges both out at sea and at there nesting sites where they have been visiting for hundreds of years.
As light pollution continues to accompany beachfront development worldwide Turtles are discouraged from coming ashore to lay there eggs. Playa Grande is a favorite for surfers during the daytime hours but at night it is not permitted to go out to the beach unless accompanied by a guide. All of the nearby hotels have shaded lights which keeps the beach very dark and still attracts nesting turtles. Although numbers seem to be on the decline the community is committed to keep the ecosystem in a pristine state in hopes that the population will recover.
